Brittany Søndberg received a BFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University in 2004. In 2005 she established a studio, built a website and started a jewelry & metal design company, Copper Chameleon. In 2008, upon moving with her husband, back to North Carolina, she became a full time artist. She has since expanded her studio, which is now located at Lyndon Street Artworks in downtown Greensboro.

Having studied under such acclaimed artists as Bob Ebendorf and Linda Darty, among others, Brittany complicates the traditional notion of jewelry by juxtaposing bold enamel hues with the simple appeal of minimalist forms. She adds touches of an antiquarian aesthetic to create work that is at once daring and accessible. Her work can be found in a variety of boutiques and galleries along the East Coast.

Along with running a successful company, Brittany teaches workshops in copper enameling and jewelry fabrication at Sawtooth School of Visual Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. She also teaches jewelry classes at The Center for Visual Artists in Downtown Greensboro and also offers private lessons out of her studio at Lyndon Street. Additionally, Brittany serves The Center for Visual Artists both as a board member and as a member of the exhibition committee.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Inspiration comes from my lifelong interest in fashion design coinciding with my love of danish modern and minimalist forms and elements. Occasionally I incorporate components with a well worn, aged or antiquarian aesthetic. The combination creates a balance between my appetite for modernity and affection for ancestral relics. The unexpected compatibility between the three motivations allows me to explore and create exclusive heirloom works containing emotion, material appreciation and contemporary faddism.

I work heavily in recycled sterling silver and copper. I very often incorporate vitreous enamel in my designs as a focal point, exclusive theme or as embellishment. I have used ebony and other rare species of wood, bezel setting them to showcase their natural artistry. Faceted cabochons, which are not all that easy to come by are my absolute favorite. Especially as opaque semi precious stones, the faceting is subtly formal and unexpectedly beautiful. Feathers have created a space in my work in there own right, feminine and dramatic, they contrast beautifully with matted enamels and simple settings. They are at their best when barely brushing the collar bone, the tail of an earring easily moving when you turn your head. The materials I use and the designs I create combined with the personal experience of wearing my collection constantly allows me to state that the jewelry I create is flattering and comfortable, bold and yet completely accessible.

I strive to make jewelry and other "objets d'art" that will be passed on to subsequent generations, connecting the future wearer with the past from which it came. A simple and romantic tradition to connect ancestors over lifetimes. I hope to be the creator of such treasures while simultaneously challenging the limits of what jewelry and adornment can be.

Marcia Anne Macdonald 1958-2010

December 10, 1958 - July 21, 2010

The Green Hill Center for NC Art hosted a really wonderful memorial service for Marcia Macdonald yesterday. There was an exhibit of her truly awesome work along with sketches, insights and works in progress.
It was an amazing event, so many people from all walks of life were there to honor her. There were lots of tears, but laughs as well. Her friends, sister, mother, husband Steve, teacher Jim Gallucci and a student from her workshops all took their turns delivering excellent eulogies. I was immensely moved by her mothers words both maternally sensitive but also her ability to interject humor, which Marcia would have enjoyed. Also her husband, not thinking he would be able to get through what he had planned to say, spoke beautifully of Marcia, of their love story and of their goofy and tender moments alike.
I really wish I had the opportunity to know her much sooner and for much longer than I did. However I seriously appreciate that I was able to call her a friend and will continue to be inspired and motivated by her lasting memory and energy, that will no doubt stay with me forever.

This image is of a collaborative necklace over 50 metalsmiths created as a gift to her when she was sick. She treasured it, one of the first things she told me when I first met her was about this necklace and how it tickled her to think they all came together in her support and honor to create such an awesome piece.

Copper Bowl Water Feature

On Saturday I installed a 24" x 8" copper bowl water feature at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Greensboro. It is a memorial that will be used as a baptismal bowl for outdoor ceremonies. I am glad it is finished but am even happier that I was involved in such a meaningful project.

Trunk Show

A successful trunk show up in MD last night, thanks to those who came and supported Copper Chameleon!

Charmed Show

Charmed, an exhibition of artist-made charms in the Store at Contemporary Craft is available now through March 2010.


Forty nationally recognized jewelers created charms in a variety of materials, from silver, gold, and enamel, to silk, plastic, suede, and romance novels. Priced between $20 and $500, you can create a collection of your favorite on a charm bracelet, or wear them individually as a pendant. In addition, DIY (do-it-yourself) charms are available for $10 each--stamp something meaningful onto a sterling silver oval and add it to your collection.

Warm It Up Chris!

So it was about 58 and sunny yesterday-beautiful. However today its 38 going down to about 18 with 3-6 inches of snow and sleet headed our way and more tomorrow. Not to mention a "real feel" of about 11 tomorrow night.

I have found some warmth inspiring photos to share. I feel kinda bad mixing some great Rothko's with yellow shoes and daisies, but it just worked.

Elm Street Window Contest

A group of Lyndon Street Artists have been working ourselves crazy on this "Whiskey Tango" window display.
It is made up of aluminum sheet and un-recyclable white painted trash. Ironically most of what you will see in there are very recognizable items, potentially wasted gifts like toys, tech gear, tools, sports equipment and more. This display playfully touches on our habits of relentless consumerism...especially around the holidays.

So shop purposefully, or at least if your unused items can't be recycled then re-purpose them. Whether it be to donate or even turn them into art. Better yet don't buy it in the first place. Instead visit Lyndon Street Artworks and buy art, not trash.

FYI all the trash will be reused by a resident artist...no wasting here!
